The Supreme Court ruled pre-lockdown closures eligible for business interruption claims. Metamorf’s software enabled 300,000 businesses to claim successfully
The opportunity we saw
After a Supreme Court ruling, UK businesses could claim relief by proving coronavirus cases within their business interruption insurance coverage area before lockdowns. No public tool existed to provide precise estimates. The FCA had to choose between setting up a call centre with a labour force, or developing software to enable claimants to self-serve.
Metamorf’s contribution
Metamorf developed an app that used the claimant's closure date and coverage radius to inform the claimant whether or not they had a valid claim. It combined official government data with adjusted data from Imperial College, which accounted for low testing rates early in the pandemic and infection rates. The app generated a downloadable report, which claimants were advised to submit as evidence to their insurer, and the report was endorsed by the ombudsman.
The impact it had
The app supported over 300,000 businesses claiming insurance relief, helping them recover lost earnings during a difficult period. Metamorf was one of two firms hired - the other a Big Four. Metamorf were able to build a fully compliant app in just three weeks, in time for the release of the official guidance, shipping it before the other firm had settled on the maths.
