The clients of corporate law firms are demanding fixed pricing instead of standard hourly billing. There's also a second shift: in-house legal teams are growing, and the law firm is increasingly asked to lead parts of a case, rather than the case in entirety—this means they need to provide fixed quotes for specific elements, something law firms haven't had to do before.
This project aimed to place a powerful set of pricing algorithms in the hands of our client's lawyers. The lawyer simply needs to provide a basic set of information about a case, and our software returns a reliable estimate for the time required to complete it. The lawyer could then apply rates and adjustments to come up with a final price.
We developed two sets of algorithms: one cleaned up historical time data, the second predicted how long a case, or part of a case, would take. Once the algorithms proved a success, we designed and built an enterprise machine-learning system, which included the app that lawyers use to price.

The new pricing application brought three core benefits. Primarily, our client was able to offer fixed prices, reliably and at scale. It enabled huge time savings too—2.5 hours for every price estimate. To top it off, our client is now viewed as a pricing innovator within the industry.
